“Now the Sprockets will dance!”

Sprecher brewing from Glendale, WI is the subject of today’s lesson.  In this episode of Beer School T.V. we try their Pub Brown Ale.  It’s one of only 5 varieties that Sprecher brews year round.

Click here to find out where you can get Sprecher Beer.  Oh, and if you’re on blogcatalog.com, give your favorite beer blog (that’s us…right?!?!) a really good grade.  We’re not really sure what these grades mean but hey, we want some gold stars!

Sprecher Pub Brown Ale

Grade: B+

We just started a Facebook fan page. If you like the blog then be our fan!

(realizing it’s a little odd to proclaim yourself a fan of your teachers…but we’re the cool teachers who give you beer).

Alright - a little history :: The term “bowl game” was first used for College football games and originated with the Rose Bowl.  It was named so because of the bowl shape of the stadium.  The term Super Bowl was first used by Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt who meant it as a joke calling the Interleague Championship the Super Bowl after watching his kids play with a Super “Ball”

::  You can’t make this stuff up folks ::

On to the beer.  We’ve saved one of the better grocery store beers for the 4th Quarter.  It comes from England, where incidentally Football is what we Americans call Soccer :)  But we digress…..Newcastle Brown Ale is one of the best drinkable complex beers out there.  It’s brewed with English and dark caramel malts and has a really good English hop flavor without being too bitter.

If you’re about to head out to a Super Bowl shin dig where you might not know everybody, this is a definitely a beer that will impress the masses and one that everyone will enjoy.

Hoppity, hoppity, hoppity hops! Merry Christmas from beerschoolblog.com as the 12 Beers of Christmas rolls on. For the 8th Beer of Christmas your teachers gave to you: Duck Rabbit Brown Ale.

Grade: B-

For the 9th Beer of Christmas we spend some time with a Very Bad Elf. Don’t miss it!

“Not the University, the Cleveland or the Charlie”

Today’s Lesson: Brown Ale’s get their name from the kind of malt that is used to make them.  The malt is (wait for it) brown in color.  Brown Ale’s can range in color from dark to more of an amber, almost red color.

Newcastle is probably one of the most well known brown ales and it’s a beer that a lot of people find very easy to drink.  We also highly recommend Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown.  You will notice that Samuel Smith’s is darker in color than Newcastle but don’t let that scare you away.  Most brown ales aren’t as heavy as they look and they are not as bitter as some stout beers or porters.  They tend to be a little sweeter and have a slight chocolate flavor where a stout will have hints of coffee.

The following “Net-V” (t.v. on the internet…that’s right…we made that term up) episode is a live tasting of Wolaver’s Brown Ale.  Also, don’t forget to visit our youtube channel here.

“You don’t believe the story of the Great Pumpkin?”

Linus: “On Halloween night, The Great Pumpkin rises from his pumpkin patch and flies through the air to deliver toys to all the children.”

What pumpkin beers have you tried? Give us some suggestions…we want to try a few more next week!

Find out more about Wolaver’s Certified Organic Ales here. They have quite the operation up there in Vermont…with Ben and Jerry…and the hippies.

RED DOOR EAST
- It’s all about the attitude. They’ve got about 7 or 8 beers on tap and several more in bottles. Good vibe (lots of vintage beer swag), Great staff, and a big front porch.

Josh went for PBR on tap (hey…it won a blue ribbon) and Brian grabbed a New Castle Brown Ale in a bottle. Fact : New Castle is Josh’s first ‘non Miller Lite’ beer. He made it a point to tell Brian that. Fact 2 : Brian doesn’t really care…….must be that Red Door attitude

What do we say about PBR or Pabst Blue Ribbon for those who have been under a rock. It’s the “fashionable piss beer” and yes…you can quote us on that. We want to be quoted, or linked, or advertised, and hopefully paid : go ahead, use it! PBR is FPB….GRADE:C+

New Castle Brown Ale: If you read the bottle it really is what it says, an all around good, brown ale. It’s smooth and nice. It’s that beer you should buy when you’re trying to one up your domestic friends. After all, it is from England. When drinking this beer you should engage your friends in conversations about soccer but always call it football and work in the words Wanker, Bloody, and Bugger into every sentence. “I wish our bloody beer would get here” “That bar tender was such a wanker” (not at red door of course) and “That guy needs to bugger off” GRADE:B+

Red Door; we love you and we’ll be back. Please let us drink for free

EVERYONE, go to RED DOOR in EAST NASHVILLE. Just go….and talk about us….a lot

Also, Brian lives on the East side so he frequents these establishments, if you see him there do the smart thing and buy him a beer……HA!

As you have most likely heard, New Belgium Brewery’s Fat Tire Ale has arrived in Nashville. We are beyond excited. On this 4th of July, we celebrate our independence from crappy beer by pouring ourselves a cold one! We also love the fact that the bottles say “Voluntarily Available in Tennessee” ~ this might be a limited edition bottle so go buy some Fat Tire Nashville!!
FYI…it’s as good a everyone says it is.  It’s available just about everywhere (22 oz. bottles for around $2.99) This is an A+ Amber Ale. Enjoy your independence! Also available is the New Belgium Mothership Wit beer (Organic wheat) and the 1554 Brown Ale.  Brian found both of these at the 4 Stop Market at the corner of 14th and Woodland on the East Side.  Happy BEERdependence Day, BEer Safe this weekend and all that other stuff about responsibility!
